Rovaniemi weather at a glance

Rovaniemi has a cold winter, a short bright summer and clear differences between the seasons. Averages for 1991 to 2020 at Rovaniemi airport show a January low of -13.5 °C and a July high of 20.1 °C. These are monthly means, so winter brings colder nights than the table shows and summer brings warmer days.

The best month depends on what you want to do. Snow rides such as a husky safari need enough snow, and the northern lights need a dark sky. The Santa Claus Office is open every day of the year, so a visit to Santa works in any month.

Rovaniemi weather by month

Precipitation counts snow as water, so a dry-looking figure in winter can still mean regular snowfall. The lows are daily averages. Single cold spells go well below them, so do not treat any column as the coldest you may meet. For most first-time visitors who want snow and Santa, December to March is the safest window. July suits you if you prefer warm days and light nights.

Daylight in Rovaniemi: short days, not a month of night

Winter days are very short, but Rovaniemi does not spend December in complete darkness. Sunlight bends in the atmosphere, so the true polar night begins about half a degree of latitude north of the Arctic Circle. The line at the village marks the Arctic Circle for visitors, and it is not the edge of the polar night.

In summer the effect reverses. The midnight sun lasts from about early June to early July, and nights stay light for a few more weeks. That is a good time for walks and boat trips, and a poor time for aurora hunting.

Snow cannot be promised

Nobody can say when lasting snow cover starts or ends, and there is no snow in summer. Programmes that need snow are planned as seasons, and the weather decides the exact days. If a sled ride is the point of your trip, travel in the middle of the season rather than at its edges.

For reindeer rides, the animals come first. Before the snow falls, wheeled sleighs can be used, and in warm weather the wheeled rides are not run to protect the animals. Dress in layers, bring warm boots and a hat, and check what your booking includes, because not every operator supplies thermal clothing.
