Rovaniemi hotels: which area fits your trip

Rovaniemi hotels and rentals fall into a few groups. Some stand at Santa Claus Village, some in the city center, some on the Ounasvaara hill, and glass igloos exist both in the village and outside the city. The area matters more than the star rating, because it decides how you reach Santa, the museums and the evening trips.

Whichever area you pick, ask how each activity reaches your accommodation, since transfers differ by operator. Northern lights tours are a good example: they run at night, so plan how you get back.

Four ways to choose where to stay

Each area has a different strength.

At Santa Claus Village

Staying at the village puts Santa and the Arctic Circle line within reach. It is a good location, not a promise that activities are part of the room rate. Entry to the village is free, but photos, animal rides and SantaPark cost extra.

Meeting Santa →

In the city center

The center has the river bank, cultural sights and walking routes. You reach the village by city bus 8 in about 30 minutes, or by taxi.

On Ounasvaara

The hill is a recreation and sports area about 3 km from the center. It suits you if you like the outdoors more than the city streets. Distances differ from one stay to the next, so check the map.

Getting there →

In a glass igloo

Glass igloos are found in the village and outside Rovaniemi. Some come with their own transfers. Do not assume that every igloo is within walking distance of the center.

Glass iglooA sky view from bedLocation varies, aurora not guaranteed

For most families who come for Santa and the snow, staying at or near the village saves the daily bus ride. For a city break with museums and walks, stay in the center.

Glass igloos in Rovaniemi

A glass igloo gives you a view of the sky from your bed. It does not give you darkness, a clear night or active northern lights. Those depend on the season and the weather, and the lights are never guaranteed. The aurora season runs from late August to early April, and summer nights are too bright.

Look at where the igloo stands. Offers inside the village and outside the city differ in transfers and distance. Ask what the price includes before you book, and do not assume that sightings, tours or meals are part of it.

Staying in apartments and homes

If you rent an apartment in a residential building, follow the house rules, keep to quiet hours and respect the privacy of neighbors. Do not photograph other people's homes, and do not leave balcony doors open in frost. Rules for holiday rentals depend on zoning, the building permit and the rules of the housing company. Occasional renting and a regular accommodation business are treated differently.

Before you book any stay, check four things: the distance to the center, how you reach the village, whether transfers are offered, and what the rate includes. A room near Santa does not include the visit to the SantaPark, a sled ride or a northern lights tour. Compare dates and room types, and read the cancellation terms.

Mid-November to early January is the busiest season at the Santa Claus Office. If you travel in those weeks, sort out your accommodation before you fix the rest of the plan.
